Introduction

The Northfield herd runs on the sour Waterberg plateaus with as little as possible pampering.

Northfield ngunis was started with ten cows given as a present from the Zulu King to the then president F W de Klerk and his son Jan. Andre & Pierre Bester then acquired the herd.

Extensive embrioflushing of elite cows and other quality females was done with good results. Different bloodlines from Loskop ,Swaziland ,Gazankulu and Makatini flats were acquired to build a herd with strong heterozygosity. The cattle are selected according to performance testing and phenotype always considering fertility and hardiness.
